I’ve heard a range of reviews of Spirit Airlines, a low-cost carrier that is relatively new to the market. I’ve heard comments that if there was a loss of cabin pressure, a credit card machine would drop down before you have access to the oxygen mask, but I’ve also heard solid reviews about their low fares and quality product. Word to the wise: they absolutely do charge you for just about everything, but if you are forewarned and prepared, you can end up saving quite a bit of money flying with them. I flew Spirit to New Orleans last weekend, and I found the crew to be friendly, the plane clean, and we were on time getting to our destination.

Flying Spirit reminded me of flying on EasyJet in Europe. Yes, when you travel on Spirit you will pay for your carry-on bag, for any kind of beverage service, and a host of other ancillary fees, but I saved over $300 on my base fare flying Spirit. I would have had to carry-on a heck of a lot of bags and drink the entire beverage cart to make up for the fare difference. [Read more…]
