Hotel Design Love: Basecamp Hotel, South Lake Tahoe

Basecamp Hotel

Basecamp Hotel

The Basecamp Hotel, located in South Lake Tahoe appears to be one part rustic ski lodge, one part retro motel and one part haute hippie headquarters. Their 50 rooms have an array of options, including the Great Indoors room (featured above) which includes an indoor camping experience and the Explorer Club room which contains 4 sets of bunk beds and an Xbox Kinect for a more communal (and pseudo hostel) experience.

The hotel has focused on features that create community, including rooftop hot tubs and outdoor fire pits. Dinners can be consumed family style three days a week so you can “break bread with other explorers.” The two stool bar serves gourmet hot chocolate, local beer and s’mores kits can be purchased to bring to the fire pits.

I think it is really exciting to see a whole new classification of hotels popping up that feature stylish amenities at a price that doesn’t break the bank and offer experiences that big brand hotels often do not have the personality to create. The idea of the opportunity to feel like a local in a new place is a concept that has become increasingly appealing and something I try to create no matter where I travel. I know if I end up in Lake Tahoe anytime soon, I will be checking in at Basecamp, no questions asked.

Location: Basecamp is located on the Southeast corner of Lake Tahoe, not too far from the Heavenly Ski Valley. The closest airports are Reno and Sacramento. Rooms start at $89, book here.
